Colts Add Rice To their Menu

Indianapolis Colts defensive end Simeon Rice

Team President Bill Polian announced on Monday night that the Indianapolis Colts have signed former Tampa Bay Buccaneer and Denver Bronco defensive end Simeon Rice.  The announcement was made on Polian’s radio show and was later posted on the team’s website.

The move was necessitated by the foot injury suffered by starter Dwight Freeney; it is not known the severity of the injury.  However, the Colts expect that it may last 4 weeks or more.  I can understand why they signed Rice; but at the same time, I do have some reservations on the signing.

First of all, I doubt that the Colts realize that they may have taken on a potential head case.  Secondly, Rice had a chance to really shine in Denver.  It is acknowledged that Denver was hurting on the defensive line even more so than Indianapolis, yet Rice, for some unexplained reason, could not hang in Denver.  But nonetheless, what’s done is done.  I can only hope that Rice does not turn out to be a long-term signing after this season is over.
