Brandon James The New Future at KR?

Brandon James. Name should sound familiar, don’t it? James is the cousin of another person with the same last name, who showed greatness to the Colts’ roster. Obviously, it’s Edgerrin James. But, trust me, I can assure you the Colts did not sign this rookie free agent just because he is a cousin of one of best backs in Colts’ history.

They needed him for much more than that. First of all, this guy is pretty fast. He can make amazing moves and also ran track back in Florida with the Gators. James is also a decent running back, but will rarely play at that position with Joseph Addai and Donald Brown already having to be filling in those spots there.

So why did exactly the Colts bring in James, then?

They needed a kick-returner, and fast. And Brandon James is the right option. The Colts haven’t had a successful returner for awhile. Chad Simpson wasn’t the man. First of all, he does get kind of pissed when he doesn’t pass the 20-yard-line and sometimes, he never does: which is unacceptable. Second, he only had one touchdown as KR in his career and usually doesn’t give much help.

Troy Walters was okay back then, but was too short and messed up sometimes. Terrence Wilkins was alright. But James could be the fit. The guy the Colts have always wanted.

James took back 112 kick returns for 2,718 yards; including an 85-yarder last year. In the punt return business, he had 117 returns for over 1,300 yards with four touchdowns. This also included an 83-yard punt return in his sophomore year.

Here are some more statistics, courtesy of the Florida Gators’ official website:

CAREER RUSHING STATISTICS

Year    No.    Yds    Avg.   TDs Long

2006     3       1      0.3       0       4

2007    24    133    5.5       0      14

2008    14     59     4.2       2      13

2009    20    109    5.4       0      25

Totals: 61    302    5.0       2      25

CAREER RECEIVING STATISTICS

Year    No.    Yds    Avg.   TDs Long

2007     8      69     8.6       0      26

2008    11     95     8.6       1      22

2009    24    215    9.0       1      32

Totals: 43    379    8.8       2      32

I’d say he isn’t that bad. I think he can do the Colts some good. I guess we’ll have to find out soon enough as he shows what he does in the preseason, right?
