Antoine Bethea Re-Signed

Well, one financial deal has been completed.

With that, there’s one player down and there are three more players on the Indianapolis Colts’ roster that need to have a new contract to go.

The Indianapolis Colts’ free-agent restricted free safety Antoine Bethea signed a four-year contract with the team today, which is worth $27M.

Bethea is expected to make $18M over the next two seasons.

Bethea has continuing to impress the Colts and making the defense look great. He has marked himself another Pro Bowl-caliber year, producing 95 tackles and four interceptions for Indy during the 2009-10 NFL season.

I expect to see a lot more from number 41 coming into the upcoming 2010-11 NFL season.

But the Colts still have three more players that need new contracts coming soon.

Peyton Manning doesn’t mind, as he has no comment about the contract. He is expected to be the highest-paid player once his new deal gets worked out and completed, according to Colts’ owner Jim Irsay.

But two other players want new contracts instead being given one by the Irsay.

It was first three with Antoine Bethea, but the number has gotten down to two with the new four-year $27M deal.

Robert Mathis and Reggie Wayne both want new contracts and are both disgruntled about them. They have skipped many camps and workouts with the team as they want new contracts after both having Pro Bowl-caliber, successful years like Bethea.

Mathis was the first start out with it. It’s a good thing the Colts got Jerry Hughes, in case if Mathis does in fact go for a major holdout. There have been rumors that Mathis could be dealt sometime in the near future or maybe next year since Hughes has the same size, body-build, and maybe talent once he progresses in the next few years.

But I believe a deal will come to Mathis soon.

As for Reggie Wayne, he just wants a new contract but is still practicing near his home back in Florida. Wayne is expected to make close $6M in the next two years, and he watns a new contract.

And that is why rumors are sparkling out of the Colts being hinted as one of the dark horses to sign veteran wide receiver Terrell Owens. It may be possible.

Bethea, Wayne, and Mathis have all missed today’s practice as the Colts closed out their summer mini-camp in Indianapolis.

Jim Caldwell said the rookies and other players have accomplished a lot like Anthony Gonzalez. Caldwell says the rookies have learned plenty since arriving at camp on April 30th, a few days just after the NFL Draft.

Caldwell says that between now and training camp, the Colts will continue working out.

Many deals need to get done, and hopefully they will.

The new season is coming by.

Let’s hope it doesn’t get ruined.
