2010 NFL Training Camp: Colts Should Immediately Sign Deshea Townsend

The Indianapolis Colts start their training camp tomorrow on August 1st.

They have invited people to try out for the team, and one of them are Deshea Townsend.

Now before I go into talking about the twelve-year veteran, let’s take a look at the cornerbacks on the team’s roster.

First, Indianapolis has only three cornerbacks on their roster with playing experience with Jerruad Powers, Kelvin Hayden, and Jacob Lacey. The rest are rookies.

When the Colts drafted Kevin Thomas in the second round, he was going to bring some hope. But he will most likely be placed on injured-reserve for the rest of the 2010-11 season after injuring himself in a May mini-camp.

Indy can’t be completely confident right now in their corners, although Powers and Lacey really stepped it up last season.

They should at least sign a veteran just to be safe. Having four corners with playing experience is just what Indy needs, and when you really look at it, the corner spot seems like the team’s weakest position.

Once training camp starts, I look to see Townsend trying to make the team. I probably would estimate he has one or two years left in his fabulous career with the National Football League.

At 34, he can’t play forever. But he is a need and could be pretty useful on Indy’s defense. Known as “Big Play” Townsend, I like to see if Deshea has a good shot at this team.

Training camp starts tomorrow. Look for some good analysis every Monday/Tuesdays and Thursday/Fridays.
