Opening Disaster: Colts Beat Badly By Texans 34-7

When it was announced that Peyton Manning wouldn’t go for the Colts Sunday in Houston, the panic level hit about 7. After Sunday’s awful 34-7 opening day loss to the Texans, the panic level should now be about 9.5.

Even without leading rusher Arian Foster, the Texans did just about everything right, as the ran past and crushed the Colts all day long, winning with ease 34-7 at Reliant Stadium.

The blowout was quick and decisive, as the Texans put up 17 points in each of the first two quarters to put the game away at halftime.

Matt Schaub was 17-for-24 for 220 yards with a touchdown to Andre Johnson. Ben Tate, playing for Foster, ran for 116 yards on 24 carries and a score.

Colts QB Kerry Collins was 16-for-31 for 197 yards and a score. He was pressured quite a bit, and was sacked three times.

The Texans outgained the Colts 384 to 236, and held the ball 36:44 to 23:16.

After the Texans took a 3-0 lead, they pushed it to 10 as Derrick Ward rushed for a 1-yard score with 2:56 left in the first quarter to make it 10-0 Houston.

On the next Colts play, rookie J.J. Watt recovered a Kerry Collins fumble, and set up the Texans in great field position. They needed just three plays, as Ben Tate went in from two yards out to make it 17-0 with 1:41 left in the first quarter.

The second quarter saw QB Schaub start to get in a flow, as he led the team on a 10-play drive that ended with him going to Johnson for a 4-yard score with 6:57 left in the half to make it 24-0.

After another Rackers field goal made it 27-0, Jacoby Jones cemented any doubt by taking a punt back 79 yards with less than a minute left in the first half to put Houston ahead 34-0.

The second half saw the teams mostly trade punts, and at one point Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri miss a 37-yard field goal with 10:39 left in the game.

Indy finally scored their first TD of the year when Collins hit Reggie Wayne with a 6-yard score after a Tate fumble with 9:17 left to make it the final of 34-7.

The Colts will look to rebound at home next week when they take on the Cleveland Browns in the home opener.
