Luck and WR’s Working to Get on Same Page at Minicamp

First overall draft pick Andrew Luck is present at this week’s mandatory minicamp with the Colts after missing the team’s recent OTAs because of rules prohibiting him from practicins with the team until after Stanford’s graduation.

Reggie Wayne said the situation was not ideal for the first year quarterback.

“You’d like to have had some time to get out there with him and work,” Wayne told Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star.

Now, Luck, Wayne, Austin Collie and others find themselves in catch-up mode. Chemistry between a quarterback and his receivers is invaluable.

“It’s definitely important,” Luck said. “That’ll be something I have to catch up on with the guys.

“It comes with practice. It comes with being out there and learning their indicators for moving, how they move, how they catch the ball.”

“You’re talking about everything,” Wayne said. “Timing, just knowing each other. Everybody is going to run routes different. The quarterback has to get a feel for that. That takes time.”

“Took me about two years, maybe a year and a half, before we really thought we were untouchable,” Wayne said of his bond with Peyton Manning.

Wayne agreed the players are going to have to take it upon themselves to speed up the process.

“We’re going to have to get together at some point between the end of minicamp and the start of training camp,” he said. “We’ll have to have an additional three or four days, something like another minicamp, where we can work on what we need to work on.”

“Got no choice,” Wayne said. “Training camp is going to be a grinder just between the quarterback and the receivers. “We’re going to have to stay after each practice, probably a good 15 minutes or so, and run routes. Whatever we have to do, we’ll do it.”
