According to Mike Chappel of the Indianapolis Star, the Colts have traded running back Delone Carter to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for wide receiver David Reed. There was an obvious log-jam at running back and with Ahmad Bradshaw beginning to practice with the team, Carter was bumped down further on the depth chart. General Manager Ryan Grigson released a statement noting that “this trade gives us a chance to improve in key areas moving forward. David is a very competitive football player and we welcome his style of play and energy. At the same time, we wish Delone well with his opportunity to play for another first-class organization and we thank him for his efforts.”
The Colts have a need at kick returner (and possibly punt returner unless they want to risk putting T.Y. Hilton out there on every punt). Reed is a guy who could fill that role. He returned kicks in 2010 and 2011 for the Ravens with average returns close to 30 yards each year. He did fumble the ball 3 times in 2011 and did not return kicks last year.
Add him to the mix of Kerwynn Williams, Cassius Vaughn and others. At the end of the day, I’m confident Vaughn will make this team as a backup corner thus he has the inside edge on returning kicks.
