The Colts today announced that WR Nathan Palmer has been waived (injured), S John Boyett has been placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list, and Josh McNaryhas been placed on exempt status. These moves get the Colts to the league mandated 75-man roster. Further cuts are coming after this Thursday’s preseason game against the Bengals which will get the Colts to the league mandated 53 man roster prior to the start of the season.
Hopefully, Nathan Palmer clears waivers which would allow the Colts to place him on Injured Reserve. I felt that Palmer was the best of our receivers in the group that includes Palmer, Jeremy Kelley, Jabin Sambrano, and Lanear Simpson. With Palmer gone (either waived or to IR), Griff Whalen seems to be a lock to make the team. The only question now is whether the Colts go with a 6th receiver – possibly one of the aforementioned, or perhaps newly acquired David Reed who can be a receiver and can return kicks.
Josh McNary was granted a roster exemption based on his date of signing and the fact that he has not yet played in a preseason game. This exemption will go away on August 31st when the Colts have to get down to 53. McNary should get a good look on Thursday against the Bengals.
By placing John Boyett on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list, the Colts can keep Boyett through the first 6 weeks of the regular season without taking up a roster spot. After week 6, Boyett will either have to be placed on the active roster, placed on IR or waived.
