Colts Make Final Roster Cuts

Grigson

The Colts made final roster cuts this afternoon to get down to the league mandated 53 man roster.

Okay, now that I’ve had a chance to look through everything, here are my thoughts.  Chandler Harnish is a good dude and I hate to see him go.  I think the Colts can stash him on the practice squad.

No surprises at running back.  Happy for Kerwynn Williams.  Hopefully he can jumpstart the return game.  It’s a little scary to look out 1 year – the only 3 RBs under contract are Havili, Ballard and Williams.

At tight end, I expected the Colts to keep Dominque Jones over Justice Cunningham.  In the end, they went with the younger Cunningham.  I have been a fan of Dominique Jones since I watched him in training camp last year, but I can’t argue with the move.  Cunningham is equally sized and actually could have a little more upside.

I am very surprised that the Colts only went with 5 wide receivers considering one of them, David Reed, is more of a kick return guy than a receiver.  I foresee a free agent pickup this week at WR.  I would be shocked if we didn’t add someone.

No surprises on the O-line.  We have some depth.  Whether or not its good depth is another question.  Ben Ijalana could be a nice pickup for someone.  I understand the move after 2 years of injuries, but he did look good – especially on Thursday.

The biggest shocker comes on the D-line.  Drake Nevis is gone.  I didn’t see that one coming.  I thought the big shocker would have been at LB.  Instead, it’s Nevis who was let go.  He will be a nice pickup for someone.

At linebacker, congratulations to Caesar Rayford!  He deserves the spot after a very good preseason.  Now, can he play against 1st string talent?  We’ll see.  I thought Mario Harvey could be a casualty, but he makes the cut.

Josh Gordy makes the team over Marshay Green at cornerback.  That was a surprise.  I think Gordy’s success on special teams coverage may have outweighed Green’s play at CB.  I’m a little disappointed, but we do need help in the kick coverage department.

Sergio Brown made the team for (likely) the same reason Gordy made it – special teams coverage.  Our inept special teams likely led to Drake Nevis’ departure (indirectly).

No surprises on special teams (LS, K, P).

So now that we have a final 53, what are my thoughts?  On offense, I worry about our depth at receiver and of course, the offensive line concerns me until we start showing some consistency.  Hopefully Bradshaw is ready to play at RB as I don’t like the makeup of the group as a whole.

On defense, I think we’re stronger than we’ve been in a long time.  I fully expect the numbers to show this strength in 2013.  I love the secondary while I feel our LBs and DL is solid.

Expect a few more changes before Sunday!
