The Day After: Indianapolis Colts Post Game News and Notes

After posting what some considered to be a scathing article on Chuck Pagano, I slept on it.  You know what – I still feel the same amount of skepticism today!  I hope Pagano shows me that my thoughts are not warranted.  He can do that by coming out and destroying the Dolphins on Sunday.  First, let’s take a look at some “day after” news and notes.

  • One thing I didn’t question in yesterday’s post was Pagano’s choice to defer to the second half after winning the coin toss.  I did question it at the time.  Check out my tweet:

In the end, it all worked out as the Colts stopped Oakland on offense (thanks to a Greg Toler pick) and they then marched down the field and scored.  Unfortunately, they were unable to score on the first drive after halftime.

  • An MRI on Dwayne Allen’s hip came back negative and Allen could be back at practice on Wednesday.  It is likely he will play against the Dolphins on Sunday.  Unfortunately, Pat Angerer continues to battle concussion symptoms and won’t return until he passes the necessary concussion tests.  Concussions are always tricky and you feel for Angerer who missed so much time last year with injuries after a solid 2011.
  • Coby Fleener did nothing to impress yesterday, catching just 1 pass for 7 yards.  He’ll have to do a heck of a lot more to retain his position with the Colts after this season.  I’m just waiting for him to have a game where he breaks out.  Unfortunately, I think it’s more likely he’ll break a bone somewhere.
  • The Colts were a +2 in turnover differential yesterday.  They had a total of 15 takeaways last year – far too few.  Luck and the offense protected the ball while the Colts new secondary picked off 2 passes.  If we win the turnover battle, we will win games.
  • Darius Heyward-Bey continues to impress as he had 3 receptions yesterday along with a key block that freed up Andrew Luck on his game-winning touchdown run.  Luck noted that “Darrius has been nothing but a great addition to this team.  Football-wise, obviously he’s got the speed. He makes the plays. A big third-down conversion, or second-and-long and he gets it and we get a first down.  Beyond that, he’s a great teammate. He’s a hard worker. We all talk about Reggie’s (Wayne) work ethic and that sort of legendary ability and Darrius is definitely on that path of work ethic. He’s a lot of fun to play with.”  Expect bigger and bigger things from DHB.
