Coach Chuck Pagano announced more bad news today as TE Dwayne Allen will miss the remainder of the season. He will require hip surgery which Pagano says “is best for Dwayne’s career”. This is devastating news to a team that has already lost starting RB Vick Ballard and starting LG Donald Thomas. It looks like we’ll see a lot more of Dominique Jones in the coming weeks. A breakout season for Coby Fleener becomes even more important.
I clearly remember the play on which Allen was injured. It occurred in the season opener against the Raiders. Allen was hit awkwardly and when he came down, I immediately feared that he may have reinjured his foot. When he was on the sidelines, he kept flexing his hip so I assumed the injury was not to his foot (this was later confirmed).
Pagano discussed Allen’s situation with media today. “We were all hoping that it would be something that with time and with rest he would come around. He’s a tough, tough, tough kid. But once we got the thing evaluated and saw what the doctors saw in there and what needed to be done . . . for the long term, it’s what needed to be done at this time. Nobody likes to see anybody get hurt, but it’s happening in every locker room.”
The Colts may have to completely revamp their offensive game plan as Allen was a big piece of it. While I like Dominique Jones, he is no Dwayne Allen. We saw more 3 receiver sets against Miami and I would expect that to continue – especially with the play of T.Y. Hilton. The Colts recently waived the final pick in the 2013 NFL draft, TE Justice Cunningham. It will be interesting to see if they re-sign him to at least the practice squad.
Tough times in Indy for sure. I guess I’ll have to let up on the coaching a bit.
