Colts Looking to Nab Penn State RB Saquon Barkley with the 3rd Pick of the Draft?

Penn State running back Saquon Barkley will get strong consideration from the Indianapolis Colts with the third-overall pick in this year’s draft according to Mike Wells of ESPN.

Incumbent starting running back Frank Gore is likely headed for free agency plus he turns 35 in May-not exactly the guy a desperate team wants to rebuild their offense around despite his expected future enshrinement in Canton. Barkley could well be the workhorse the Colts need. There is a remote possibility the Cleveland Browns could take Barkley with the first pick in the draft and use their second first-round pick at No.4 on a quarterback. That would be a risky strategy, however, for a team that has already outsmarted itself in successive years by passing on both Carson Wentz and DeShaun Watson. It is hard to imagine new GM John Dorsey will make that same kind of mistake in 2018.

Needless to say, the Colts have their own uncertainty under center after Andrew Luck was forced to miss the entire 2017 season with shoulder issues. Given the number of glaring holes in their current roster, the Colts really have no choice but to cross their fingers and count on Luck rebounding in 2018. A talented three-down back like Barkley would make Luck’s job much easier.
