Could QB Brian Hoyer Be on the Chopping Block for the Colts This Offseason?

Numberfire.com has out a list of one player for each AFC team they think might be on the chopping block this offseason.

For the Colts the site has picked QB Brian Hoyer as the player that could find himself released. Here’s what they have to say about Hoyer getting cut.

Indianapolis Colts – QB Brian Hoyer

Dead Cap Hit $2M, Cap Saving $3M

It is possible that Jacoby Brissett might not be the long term answer at quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts. But his position atop the depth chart is far more certain than the player immediately beneath him. Brian Hoyer played a meaningful number of snaps in two games in 2019, games that saw him throw four touchdowns to four interceptions while completing just 53.8% of his passes.

Hoyer’s 2020 cap hit is far too large for a player the team would be hoping will take no part in the proceedings, and a younger, cheaper backup to Brissett can surely be found — at least until the team decides what to do next.

Colts Ink Tight End Jack Doyle to Three-Year Contract Extension

The Colts locked up a key component of their offense Friday afternoon, signing versatile tight end Jack Doyle to a three-year contract extension, Jim Ayello and Joel A. Erickson of the Indianapolis Star report.

According to a source, the base value of the deal is worth a little more than $21 million, though it could climb to close to $24 million with incentives.

In his seventh NFL season, Doyle was playing in the final year of a three-year, $19 million deal and slated to hit free agency in the offseason.

Instead, the Colts locked up a team leader and critical piece of Frank Reich’s offense for three more seasons. If he plays out the length of the contract, Doyle will have played all 10 of his NFL seasons for his hometown team.
