Crennel Could Get Hit with Tampering Charges for Talking About Manning

Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel made a comment at the NFL Scouting Combine to the media about Peyton Manning saying, “I’m not supposed to talk about anyone else’s players. He’s still a player with Indianapolis. But with a talent like that, I would be crazy not to consider it if he were available. I’ll leave it at that.”

He was also asked about the potential of going after free-agent quarterback Chad Henne. Henne had played under the Chiefs current offensive coordinator Brian Daboli.

“You have to look at all of it and see how it all plays out. You have to juggle some balls and see what happens. Because of his relationship with Diboli, I think that would be a consideration but to say right now that’s the case, I’m not ready to do that.”

Such responses could leave Crennel with a potential tampering case, according to Yahoo!. Current league rules prohibit “any public or private statement of interest, qualified or unqualified, in another club’s player to that player’s agent or representative, or to a member of the news media.”

According to Bob Glauber of Newsday, he was told the Colts are not inclined to pursue tampering charges at this point. The NFL can pursue the issue if it chooses, but it’s probably not going to happen, but Crennel needs to watch what he says about such situations in the future.
